The scoop
Under the Affordable Care Act, most health plans must cover breastfeeding support and counseling from trained providers, plus breastfeeding supplies, with no copay for pregnant and nursing parents.
That can include visits with a lactation consultant before and after birth. Plans may require an in-network provider and can set visit limits, so check yours.
How to claim it
- 1
Ask your plan which lactation consultants are in network.
- 2
Book a visit before or after birth; many hospitals also have lactation teams.
- 3
Confirm there's no copay when you book.
Who qualifies
- Most ACA-compliant health plans (not grandfathered plans)
- In-network rules and visit limits vary
