The scoop

Safe Kids coalitions across the U.S. run car seat checks and, in many areas, distribute free or low-cost car seats to families in need. Some car seat inspection stations, hospitals and health departments do too.

Programs usually ask for proof of WIC, Medicaid or SNAP, or of low income, and often include a short class on installing the seat correctly.

How to claim it

  1. 1

Find your local coalition in the Safe Kids directory.

  2. 2

Ask about car seat distribution, or call 211 for other programs near you.

  3. 3

Bring proof of income or benefits if required, and book a fitting session.

Who qualifies

  • Usually income-based (WIC, Medicaid or SNAP often qualifies)
  • Availability varies by area
