The short version

  • Medicaid health plans are the most common source of free car seats, usually as a reward for going to prenatal or postpartum checkups.
  • Local Safe Kids coalitions, some children's hospitals and programs found through 211 give free or low-cost seats to families in need.
  • Get your seat checked for free by a certified technician. Many installations have mistakes.
  • Only use a used car seat if you know its full history, and check for recalls and expiration.

A good car seat is one of the most expensive things on a baby list, and you need one before you can leave the hospital. Here's how to get a free car seat in 2026, where to get it installed correctly for free, and what to check before accepting a hand-me-down.

1. Through your Medicaid health plan

Most states run Medicaid through private health plans, and many offer pregnant members extra "value-added benefits." A free car seat is one of the most common. Real examples:

  • Parkland Community Health Plan (Texas): a free car seat for a first-trimester prenatal checkup.
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (STAR and CHIP): a car seat or play yard for a timely prenatal visit plus enrolling in its pregnancy program.
  • Humana Healthy Horizons (Oklahoma): a convertible car seat or portable crib through its HumanaBeginnings program.

These extras change every year and vary by plan and region. Look at your plan's member handbook or website for "value-added benefits," or call member services and ask what they offer pregnant members. We couldn't find private (non-Medicaid) insurers that routinely give away car seats, but it never hurts to ask yours.

2. Safe Kids coalitions and car seat programs

Safe Kids Worldwide has local coalitions across the U.S. Many run car seat distribution programs for families who need help, often with a short class on installing the seat. Its Buckle Up program, run with General Motors, also holds free car seat check events. Search for events near you on the Safe Kids website.

3. Hospitals, WIC and 211

Some hospitals, especially children's hospitals, run car seat programs for families who can't afford one, often after a short safety class. Availability varies a lot, so ask your hospital's social worker or your WIC office. Or call 211 and ask for car seat assistance near you.

4. Trade in an old seat at Target

If you have an old or expired car seat, Target's trade-in event (twice a year, usually spring and fall) gives you a 20% off bonus toward a new car seat, stroller or select baby gear. In 2026 the events ran in April–May and September–October.

Get it installed right, for free

Certified Child Passenger Safety technicians at inspection stations across the country will check your installation and show you how to do it yourself, usually for free. Some offer virtual checks too. Use NHTSA's Car Seat Inspection Finder to find one by ZIP code, and go before your due date.

Is a used car seat safe?

A free hand-me-down can be fine, but NHTSA's advice is to only use a used seat if you know its full history. Before you accept one, check that:

  • It has never been in a moderate or severe crash.
  • It still has its labels showing the manufacture date and model number.
  • It hasn't expired. Most seats have an expiration date on the label or shell.
  • It hasn't been recalled. Check the model number at NHTSA.gov/Recalls.
  • It has all its parts and the instruction manual.

If you can't confirm all of these, use one of the free programs above instead.
