The scoop
WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) provides healthy foods, breastfeeding support and nutrition education to eligible families.
Many working families qualify. If you already get Medicaid, SNAP or TANF, you automatically meet WIC's income rules (you still need a short nutrition screening).
How to claim it
- 1
Check eligibility on the USDA WIC site (USDA's nutrition agency is now called the Food and Nutrition Administration).
- 2
Contact your state or local WIC agency to make an appointment.
- 3
Bring proof of identity, address and income to your appointment.
Who qualifies
- Income at or below 185% of the poverty line, or on Medicaid/SNAP/TANF
- Pregnant, postpartum, or children under 5
