The scoop

Under the Affordable Care Act, most U.S. health insurance plans must cover a breast pump at no cost to you. It may be a rental or a new one you keep. Federal guidelines also include pump parts and breast milk storage supplies.

Plans can decide whether it's manual or electric, how long a rental lasts, and whether you get it before or after birth. Medicaid, TRICARE and WIC have their own pump programs. Our guide walks through each one.

How to claim it

  1. 1

Call your insurance provider and ask about breast pump coverage.

  2. 2

Ask your provider for a prescription if your plan requires one.

  3. 3

Order through an in-network DME supplier, which bills your plan.

Who qualifies

  • Most ACA-compliant health plans (not grandfathered plans)
  • Medicaid, TRICARE and WIC have separate rules
