The scoop

The Canada Learning Bond (CLB) puts free money into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for children from lower-income families. You don't have to contribute anything yourself to get it.

From April 2028, the government plans to open an RESP automatically for eligible children born in 2024 or later who don't have one by age 4.

How to claim it

  1. 1

Get your child a Social Insurance Number.

  2. 2

Open an RESP at a bank or credit union and ask for the Canada Learning Bond.

  3. 3

Keep filing your taxes so eligibility can be checked each year.

Who qualifies

  • Lower-income families
  • Child has a Social Insurance Number
