The scoop

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment to help with the cost of raising children under 18. The amount depends on your family income, how many children you have and their ages.

Families with an adjusted family net income under $38,237 get the maximum amount for each eligible child. You need to file your taxes each year to keep receiving it.

How to claim it

  1. 1

Apply when you register your baby's birth (most provinces let you apply at the same time), or through CRA My Account.

  2. 2

File your tax return every year, even with no income, to keep getting payments.

Who qualifies

  • Primary caregiver of a child under 18, living in Canada
  • Amount based on family net income
