The Sure Start Maternity Grant is a one-off payment of £500 to help with the costs of having a child. You don't have to pay it back, and it doesn't affect your other benefits.
It's usually for your first child (or a multiple birth), and you or your partner must get a qualifying benefit such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
How to claim it

Check eligibility on GOV.UK.

Claim from 11 weeks before your due date until 6 months after the birth.

Apply as GOV.UK directs (the claim form is sent by post).
Who qualifies
- Usually no other children under 16
- You or your partner get a qualifying benefit such as Universal Credit
