The scoop

Reach Out and Read is a national nonprofit that builds reading into pediatric care. At participating practices, doctors and nurses give children a free book at well-child visits from about six months to age five, and coach parents on reading aloud.

It runs in all 50 states, so there's a good chance your pediatrician already takes part.

How to claim it

  1. 1

Ask your pediatrician's office whether they participate in Reach Out and Read.

  2. 2

Your child gets a book at each eligible well-child visit, no sign-up needed.
